We're frantically preparing for the Spring Show on Sunday, and Em has me working WAY outside my comfort zone. Somehow, due to a small avalanche of special orders, she has fallen behind on her hats, and she has enlisted me to help. The goal, of course, is to finish as many hats as possible for the show, because the more options there are, the more likely we'll be to sell some.
That leaves me in a strange place, though. I also have things I need to finish and that I wanted to have at the show, and I always have more ideas for ties and patches to stitch. I'm the same way too, as far as sales go -- the more I have to display, the more likely I am to sell pieces.
Really, though, I think it comes down to the fact that I'm not very confident when it comes to lining her hats. It's a lot of measuring and cutting and pinning, and hand sewing with needles that seem like strands of human hair compared to my embroidery needles. Every little bit of fluff gets caught on my callouses and causes great explosions of thread and silk. Pins go in crooked, and half of them find their way into my thumb.
I'm happy to help, but I'll stick to embroidery in the future. The hat stuff is too complicated for me. If nothing else, I have an even more solid appreciation of the work she puts into her hats than I even did before.
Maybe that was her plan all along.(ADAM)
